Cut Off Wheels

Specimens for metallographic analysis must never undergo structural changes during cutting. Kemet offer 3 different types of metallographic quality cut-off wheels for use on all cut off-machines – aluminium oxide cut off wheels, silicon carbide cut-off wheels and diamond cut-off wheels.

The type of cut off wheel to be used depends on the type of material to be cut and in particular to its hardness. Please refer to the table below:

Abrasive

Material

Material hardness

Aluminium Oxide

  • Low carbon, mild and extra mild   and treated steel with medium cross sections

100-350 HV

Aluminium Oxide

  • Treated Steel
  • Stainless Steel
  • Refractory Steel
  • Alloyed Cast iron

300-500 HV

Aluminium Oxide

  • Treated Steel with fragile coatings
  • Difficult Materials

> 500 HV

Aluminium Oxide

  • Thin cuts
  • Sintered Steel with small cross section
  • Hard metal sandwich materials

80-300 HV

Silicon Carbide

  • Aluminium
  • Copper and alloys
  • Non-ferrous metals
  • Titanium and alloys

30-350 HV

Silicon Carbide

  • White, grey and spheroidal graphite cast iron
  • Titanium and alloys

30-350 HV

Silicon Carbide

  • Titanium
  • Titanium alloys
  • Non ferrous metals

30-350 HV

These are available in 150mm (6"), 180mm (7"), 230mm (9"), 250mm (10"), 300mm (12") and 350mm (14") diameters. Wheels are designed to give best possible burr free sectioning. It is recommended that Kemet Soluble Fluid for re-circulating cooling systems be used.

Aluminium Oxide Cut-off Wheels

Aluminium Oxide abrasive wheels are recommended for sectioning hard, medium, and soft metals, ferrous alloys and tool steels.
